Judging from the other reviews, this printer seems to be a good value, good quality, and innovative - but very noisy. I have found it to be a good value and not noisy at all, compared with the other printers I've had.***UPDATE***After a month and a half, the printer broke and had to be replaced under warranty. This was an easy process, because I had registered everything on the Brother website. But the printer looks and feels cheap and poorly constructed in some ways, and I had trouble with this poor construction in two different areas. Thus I changed my rating from 5 stars to 4.***The printer is more fragile than any I have ever owned. I can't imagine why they use the word "Business" in its name, because in a real business with real people banging things around, several things on this printer would have broken in the first month (maybe even the first week). The manual says to slide the paper tray in GENTLY -- good luck getting your co-workers to do that! Several pieces of the printer that are made of plastic feel cheap, fragile, and easy to break. (Duh! Printers aren't made of steel... I'll grant you that. But they still could be stronger.)***When you lift the lid to clear a paper jam, there is a green plastic rod or beam on the left that holds the lid open. When you need to close the lid, you fiddle with this rod to release it and allow the lid to go back down. From the start, I have had trouble with that rod. Releasing it is not a natural action. Once it came completely loose and popped out of its slot in the upper left part of the lid. I had to get a flashlight to figure out how to pop it back in place.***The BIG problem happened when I had to clear the machine's first real paper jam. The LCD showed me how to do this, but somehow the dim lighting made me miss the actual location of the jam. I didn't see any jammed paper at all. When I finally located it by going through all the steps a second time (again, a flashlight was required, maybe that's because I'm over 40 ahem cough cough or because it's on the side of my office which is not full of illumination) it was easy to remove, but then... the green rod popped out again. This time I couldn't get it to go back in place, and as I was fiddling, suddenly almost the entire lid came loose!! Since there are electronics inside, I realized that the LEFT hand corner should be handled extremely carefully, since that must be where the wires went from the body to the lid. The RIGHT hand corner had come COMPLETELY DETACHED from the main part of the machine (making it difficult to prevent the left corner from breaking its wires). There seemed to be a nub or something that might mean I had detached something, not broken something, but I could find nothing in the manuals that explained this. 24 hours later, the Brother phone tech support phones opened, and one of their people walked me through the 77 steps to troubleshoot, and when he agreed that the only thing wrong with the machine was this half-detached lid, he did NOT tell me how to reattach it; he set up the exchange for the warranty replacement. Thus I'm pretty sure that this detached lid was not something I could have fixed myself.***That said, the replacement printer has arrived and is working great. I will treat it very carefully, and practice unlatching the troublesome rod so that it becomes second nature. Again, NO WAY anyone is going to stand for this in a real "business" environment.***END OF UPDATEI had been a loyal Cannon customer, but when my Canon broke, the Canyon Loyalty Program had a price that was not enough to keep me loyal. (Wow-Sometimes my dictation feature doesn't work very well!) This Brother printer seems to have everything going for it - except it was noisy, supposedly. I thought the sideways paper feeding was very clever, and I thought that the resulting ability to print on 11 x 17 paper would be a big plus (even though I haven't actually used that feature yet). I keep my printer in a closet with a flimsy door, so I thought that would cut down on the noise. So I was happy to discover that, compared with other printers I've had, the Brother printer is not noisy at all. It does make a wide variety of, to me, very weird little noises when it's getting ready to feed the paper. This is especially true using the single-sheet feeder. It goes tick tick tick tick tick at least a dozen times, then feeds the paper in a couple of inches, then pushes it back out, then pushes it back in, goes tick tick tick tick a little more, and finally prints the entire page very quickly in a frenzy of activity. I don't know for sure what it's doing, but what I think it's doing is very carefully being sure that the paper is being fed in perfectly straight. In fact, the first three sheets I fed by hand did not go through the printer completely straight; it was off by a couple of degrees, resulting in uneven printing along an edge of labels. Labels are expensive, so I was disappointed; however, this problem has not happened again. My only complaint is that the paper tray seems very flimsy. The instructions say to slide it in until it clicks, but slowly; I would agree with this, because my guess is that if you push it in too quickly, it will break. But I have to admit that it has not broken yet. I'll check back in later with another review if anything breaks (***IT DID -- NOT THE PAPER TRAY, BUT SOMETHING ELSE. SEE UPDATE***). In the meantime, I'm going to go order some of that inexpensive ink!I been waiting forever to have a new printer for use at home. I've had random laser printers that were re-tired from work, when they ran out of toner, i'd get another, so on and so on. I usually do most my printing at the office, but the heavens have granted me the wonders of telecommuting. I soon discovered the need for a good quality printout for reports, proposals, etc. This printer covers all my personal and business needs.Printing:Right off the bat, the printing wasn't so great to the point where I was concerned. However, I really just needed it for my random print jobs for my home office. Overtime, it worked it's way out. Even on basic copy paper, this printer output's print outs beautifully. I was surprised when someone who received a printout asked if it was printed on a laser printer. I've never came across a printer that prints the paper horizontally, so it's pretty unique, I'm sure it helps with the speed. The print output tray is connected to the paper tray so if you need to reload, pull those important print out's off the output tray! I'm worried about the longevity of this tray as it seems kinda flimsy, like I'm going to knock into it the wrong way and it's going to break. So far, no problems with me bumping into it as I push the output tray back in.-- It prints Two Sided DUPLEX!, which in my opinion a must in a printer. Let's save some trees people, print on BOTH sides of the paper. A lesson my late grandfather installed on me as a child forever ago. It's worth the short delay. If you want to print both sides for a presentation, you better be using 24lb paper or else the ink will bleed through a little bit on paper of lesser quality. If it's to be conservative like me and want to save trees and your just trying to save paper on print outs you need to reference for a few hours, scribble on and throw out, then go ahead with the standard 20lb copy paper. The bleed thru is minimal and not distracting to work off of.--Aftermarket Printer Ink doesn't work. Brother printers check and make sure their legit Brother OEM replacement cartridges. I was REALLY disappointed when I ordered ink from YoYo Ink and they didn't work on two printers of this model after two shipments. The prices don't seem to terrible for Brother OEM ink though so I guess I can't be cheap.I CAN FINALLY PRINT FROM MY iOS DEVICES!This was an added plus and embarrassingly a surprise. I usually read up on everything before I buy. After all the research I looked into, its either not well point out or I overlooked it in excitement at a printer within my budget and of a trusted name. I wasn't sure before purchasing it if I could, but it wasn't a major factor.Scanning:It was a top feeder, which is usually what I prefer to use with documents. It scans very quickly through the feeder, much faster than anHP 8500 All in One. It can scan double sided print outs as well using the the feeder.CopyingIt does that quite well.Faxing:Faxing in 2015? I prefer to send the document via email, the system can send an email or scan it to your computer. However, I did purchase one of this for one of my companies retail locations-- and they report is faxes quite well. I personally only have a cell phone, and no land line to fax from so I don't have much hands on experience for sending and receiving until I visit that retail location that I gave one too.CompatibilityIf your in IT, you'll appreciate Brother's wide range of drivers to work on many platforms. I use ONLY Brother brand laser printers at ALL my companies retail locations because they work great with our custom Point of Sale and limitations of the platform powering it.ConnectivityIt connects to Wi-Fi and LAN, and to iOS devices and more. The GoodiesA basic, but responsive and small touch screen display. The style is attractive decorated with a glossy black smooth finish. All in all, a great printer for the price. I have no complaints as of yet. When I do.. I'll be back, trust me...
